Background of Utang na Loob

Utang na loob, a Filipino cultural value often translated as debt of gratitude, profoundly influences Filipino families, including millennial breadwinners. While many view this value positively as a reflection of gratitude and compassion toward help received, research indicates an awareness of its potential abuse and manipulation. A specialist interview with a psychologist professor highlighted that the value’s authentic nature can be corrupted when it is transformed from a voluntary act of goodwill into a binding obligation to provide. This shift can consequently lead to significant pressure and emotional burden on breadwinners, affecting their personal choices, familial relationships, and overall emotional well-being.

Our Motivations

Our Motivations

Utang na loob, also known as debt of gratitude, is a Filipino value that refers to an individual’s commitment to repaying people who have assisted them. Throughout the years, this value has been used either in an appreciative or abusive manner, which has come to affect millennial breadwinners.

With this project, we aim to explore how utang na loob can affect different Filipino breadwinners, creating opportunities for more discussion on how utang na loob can both be positive and negative.
